City of Darkness, City of Light

Hello all,

I noticed on the previous reads list the book City of Darkness, City of Light. I came into the book club with the Welsh Girl. Was this book worth reading???? If it was good let me know so I can get a copy and read it South of the border.

Well, nobody finished the book. I volunteered to finish it and report back to the group. The story takes place in Paris during the French Revolution. Basically, it was agreed that the author did a good job presenting all the research she did about the French Revolution but fell short when she tried to meld the storytelling to the facts. She took actual historical characters, fictionalized some of their interactions, embellished known personal details, then presented their stories in separate chapters, with an emphasis on the female characters. The overall story was too choppy to keep track of who was who and what was going on. It didn't flow in a way to keep the reader interested. I won't spoil anything by telling you how it turned out in case you want to read it. It was not a BAD book, but not GOOD, either. Very disappointing to Linda and me because we have both enjoyed other Marge Piercy books.

Toni.... I completely forgot to tell you that Annelle has selected the next book. You could take that with you on your trip.... BY THE POOL. She has picked, "A Year in The World" by Frances Mayes. I know you will be gone for an extended period and we will probably be on that book when you return. Or maybe on mine... we can keep you posted. Have a wonderful time.... Linda
